Student Council Recycling Conservation Project

In the past, the student council organization at Bremond ISD has consisted of high school students ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade.  Over the past two years, a middle school student council organization has been reestablished under the direction and sponsorship of Mrs. Tina Smith.  The high school student council has been sponsored by Mr. Clayton Bishop and Ms. Leah Hudak since 2008 and has been growing ever since.

The BISD recycling program began in the spring of 2009 by Bishop and Hudak, but merely consisted paper recycling bins in the teacher workrooms and located next to copy machines.  By the fall of 2009, most of the high school teachers had recycling boxed in their classrooms and about 5 boxes of paper were taken to the college station recycling center each week.

This year brought about a school wide recycling movement which included all teachers ranging from elementary to high school as well as administration.  We currently haul about 15 boxes of paper a week to the recycling center, bringing our total this 2010-2011 school year to over 200 boxes!

Each Friday the high school class representatives take turns collecting paper from each class and loading it up to be taken to the center.  Middle school members have been volunteering their time as well.  Below are three students helping with the recycling.  To the left are two middle school members, J.R. Rocha and Tanner Redus, and to the right is our high school senior representative and student council president Jeffrey Drymalla.

We hope to collect over 300 boxes by the end of the year.  About 1/3 of the world’s trees cut down go into paper production.  By recycling and reusing paper, we are decreasing the amount of trees being cut down.  Recycling centers estimate that every 1 ton of recycled paper received, saves about 1 ton of wood/trees.  We hope to save as many forests as possible!
