Bremond High School National Honor Society (NHS) is sponsoring another blood drive for the school year on Tuesday, April 17th from 1-6 p.m.

The Carter Blood Care Mobile Unit will be located on the high school parking lot beside the football field.  Donors must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and have a photo ID.  Students that are 16 may donate if their parent signs a form for permission.  Students aged 16-17 must also have a Zika permission form signed by their parents before they can donate.  Forms are available at the high school office.

Before donating blood, be sure to eat at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of fluids especially water.  Try to eliminate drinking tea, coffee, energy drinks, and other caffeinated drinks.  Tea interferes with iron absorption by about 50 percent.  Quite a few potential donors had low iron levels at our previous blood drive.  Eat foods rich in iron, since only blood with good iron levels will be accepted for donation.  Some foods rich in iron include meat, raisins, strawberries, orange juice, whole grain bread, rice, sweet potatoes, peas, broccoli, eggs, and dried beans.  Your diet can also be supplemented with a multivitamin.

Giving blood is a great way for donors to learn vital information about their own health.  A free mini-physical is given at the time of donation, which includes a screening of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron levels.  Blood donors can also check their cholesterol level within days following donation.

Remember almost everyone will know someone who needs blood.  There is no substitute for human blood.  It cannot be manufactured.  Come, donate and save lives.  To schedule an appointment, call Rosemary Wilganowski at (254) 746-2019.
